The Haslemere Community First Responders Group was launched in November 2010. The scheme aims to provide emergency care within the life-critical early minutes following cardiac arrest, heart attack, to unconscious patients or those with other life threatening illness or injuries. The team of volunteers covers Haslemere, Hammer, Hammer Hill, Lynchmere, Fernhurst, Grayswood, Hindhead and Grayshott..Volunteers are trained by South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SECAmb) to deliver life-saving skills to members of the local community in the minutes before an ambulance arrives. Responders are not a substitute for ambulance crews and an ambulance is always despatched. As responders live or work within the community they are able to attend the scene of an emergency in a very short time often within the first few minutes and in the majority of incidents they would be first on scene. The responder can then begin vital life-saving first aid and use equipment including a defibrillator and oxygen before the arrival of an ambulance, further increasing the patient’s chance of survival.
